Creation of the first UXO detection test site in Slovakia at the Rohožník military training range

In the development of geophysical methods for unexploded ordnance detection, a very important role is played by UXO test sites, where known and other explosive/nonexplosive items are buried in ground at defined positions. At such various detection can be compared, developed tested. Based on cooperation between Department Applied Geophysics (Comenius University), Institute Forensic Science (Slovak Ministry Interior) Rohožník military training range project was performed, which focused creation first site Slovakia. It restricted to one type – inert tank projectiles with diameter 100 mm. These were different depths orientations. Data acquisition mapping performed from surface, using total field intensity magnetometers, vertical difference magnetometers penetrating radar (GPR). acquired all processed, interpreted archived future reference. Most readily detected each sensors used but deepest least favourable orientation exceeded limit trialled performing better than gradiometers. For application GPR, this found have soil conductivity conditions permitting even when favourably oriented. Vertical presenting smallest reflective cross-section some shallow escaping detection. The most accurate depth estimations detectable obtained GPR data presented as 2D non-migrated sections. Geophysical sets seeded sites now established provide base-line comparison new interpretation technologies evaluated.
